How to choose the right tables

What choices do you need to make when looking for the perfect tables for your restaurant, café, canteen, or hotel? There are many different factors to consider in order to find the right tables – such as size, shape, color, and material.

Café tables for every style and need

When furnishing your café or restaurant, the tables are crucial for creating a functional space with a pleasant atmosphere. That’s why we take pride in having a wide selection of café tables that fit every style and need. You can purchase a complete café table with a tabletop and legs, but you can also assemble your own table base and top to customize the café tables to perfectly match your unique style and needs.

Create your unique café table at Zederkof

With the right café tables, you can create a unique and personal space where guests will enjoy sitting – and will want to return to. Whether you prefer a modern, classic, or rustic style, there are café tables that can match your aesthetic and functional desires.

Combine different table tops and bases to create café tables that are tailored to your decor.

How to choose the right base for café tables

When it comes to café tables, the table bases are just as important as the table tops, but to choose the right base, there are several factors you need to consider to ensure you select the best possible base that fits your needs. We naturally have a large selection of bases in standard dining table height, but we also have high bases XL bases that can be used with bar stools or as standing tables for receptions.

Table bases in different designs and materials

At Zederkof, you will find a selection of table bases in various materials such as aluminum, cast iron, and steel, which provide robust and durable bases. Each base material has its own characteristics and design advantages. You can choose from table bases in black, shiny, or brushed metal, and we even have variants in copper-look.

Cast iron bases can generally support a slightly larger table top due to their high weight, which also gives them good stability. You can find both classic cast iron bases that add a rustic charm and modern cast iron bases with simple, clean lines. Table bases in cast iron can be used both outdoors and indoors.

Aluminum bases provide a timeless and stylish appearance, and they are significantly lighter – which can be an advantage depending on where and how the café tables will be used. Aluminum bases can also be used both indoors and outdoors.

Steel bases are best suited for indoor use, and we have both powder-coated table bases and elegant copper-look options in our range, so you can find the perfect match for your café decor.

Bases in different shapes: X, Y, O, or T?

The shape of the table base also has a lot to say regarding stability – there are advantages and disadvantages to the different shapes, and it can affect both the stability of the table and the comfort of the guests. We typically recommend an O-, Y-, and X-shaped foot for a round table, but only your imagination sets the limits for the possibilities. Regardless of which shape you choose, you should be aware that it has the right size for the desired tabletop (you can read more about this later or see in the table under seating guidance).

◯ Round (or square) base:

A round or square base can be a stylish and stable choice, especially for smaller café tables. This is a very common table base that provides good support for the table. However, it may slightly limit the freedom of movement for the chairs, as the base takes up space under the table. This type of base adds an elegant and stylish touch to the cafe table.

✕ Cross-shaped table bases:

X-bases and Y-bases (cross-shaped bases) are the most popular because they offer high comfort, functionality, and modern design. A Y- or X-shaped foot provides maximum space for chairs under the table and ensures that your guests have good legroom and freedom of movement, making it easy for them to sit comfortably. The cross-shaped base also provides good balance, so the cafe table stands stable and secure. The Y-base stands on 3 feet, while the X-base has 4 – the biggest advantage of the Y-base over the X-shaped is that a cafe table on 3 legs cannot wobble.

⏊ Duo / T-shaped bases:

T-bases are typically used in pairs at the ends of larger or rectangular tables. This base provides maximum freedom of movement for chairs, as there are no legs or obstacles in the middle of the table. It is suitable for events where easy access and flexibility are needed – for example, at a buffet. It is a practical solution that ensures all guests can sit comfortably around the table.

Dynamic or static setup?

Is your setup dynamic, where you either regularly rearrange or pack down every day – for example, outdoor cafe environments – or do you have a more static setup where everything has a fixed place, and there is rarely any movement or change in arrangement? Weight is an important parameter in this regard. If you want a flexible setup, you should opt for lightweight aluminum frames that are easy to move. On the other hand, if you prefer heavy and stable tables that do not shift if they get a little push, you might want to choose table frames made of cast iron.

Weight of the table frame

Our range consists of both lightweight aluminum frames and heavy cast iron frames. As mentioned earlier, lightweight frames are easier to handle, which is an advantage for dynamic setups. The heavier cast iron frames are beneficial for setups that are more permanent, and the weight contributes to greater stability. In general, it is important that the size of the frame and the tabletop match, as otherwise the tables can become unstable. The frame must weigh more than the tabletop to achieve optimal stability.

Frame with or without tilt?

If you have a dynamic setup – for example, an outdoor serving area where the furniture needs to be set up and packed away every day – a frame with tilt can be an advantage; the tilting function allows you to tilt the tabletop upright, so the table takes up less space and can therefore be stored in a smaller area.

The right table frame for uneven surfaces

The surface where the cafe table will stand also plays a role in choosing the right frame. If the surface is uneven – such as cobblestones or tiles – we recommend a table frame with 3 legs, as they stabilize better on uneven surfaces. However, all frames are equipped with leveling screws that can be adjusted according to the surface, ensuring the table stands stable.

Ensures your cafe furniture has a long lifespan

Our selection of cafe furniture is of the highest quality, guaranteeing durable furniture for both indoor and outdoor use. If you wish to further extend the lifespan of your frames, it is of course a good idea to store them indoors outside of the season. This will protect them from the harmful effects of weather conditions and significantly extend their lifespan, but it is not a direct recommendation.

It should be noted, however, that placing your frames near saltwater can cause rust. Over time, for example, sea mist that moves inland will lead to corrosion. In general, frames made of cast iron are less vulnerable to the effects of saltwater compared to other materials. Therefore, it can be an advantage to choose cast iron bases if you need to place your furniture near the sea.

How to choose the right tabletop

Of course, you cannot have a cafe table without a tabletop. The choice of tabletop depends, just like the base, on several different parameters – both aesthetic and practical.

Here are a few tips that can help you choose the best tabletop for your cafe table:

  • Choose materials that match the style of your cafe – laminate, marble, wood, etc.
  • Choose a color and finish that will enhance the decor of your cafe.
  • Choose a shape and size that fits the space and purpose.
  • Consider how you will use the table – should it be able to stand outdoors, for example?

Tabletops for cafe tables

Zederkof offers different types of tabletops to meet various aesthetic preferences. You can choose between round and square cafe table tops, depending on your needs. There is also a wide selection of materials to choose from, including wood, metal, and laminate. In our range, you can of course find black, white, gray, and wood-colored tabletops, but also more special colors like blue and red or effects and patterns that can make your cafe tables eye-catching elements in the cafe’s decor.

Some of the tabletops even have an elegant brass or copper edge that adds an exclusive look to the cafe table. If you want a more rustic expression, you can also find tabletops made of reclaimed wood that add warmth and character to your cafe decor. Finally, you should choose furniture designed with quality in mind – and we’ve already taken care of that part when we selected our range.

Round or square tabletops?

Whether you prefer square or round tabletops is both a matter of preference and space considerations. Our selection of tabletops comes in both shapes, so you can choose according to your needs. Round tables create a cozier and more intimate atmosphere, which can be ideal for smaller gatherings and deep conversations. They also add an organic and soft aesthetic to the room. However, it may be necessary to have more space around the tables for guests to move comfortably.

On the other hand, square tabletops provide a more structured and modern look and are great for larger cafes, restaurants, or pubs – square tables can also be easily pushed together to create more space if needed, offering greater flexibility in the decor. They can be easily combined and arranged to create different configurations, which is ideal for larger parties and events. With the option to add more tables and covers, you can always easily make room for more guests.

Material on table tops

When choosing table tops for the cafe tables, you also need to consider material options. With the right choice of table tops, you can create a pleasant and inviting atmosphere that will appeal to your guests and contribute to a positive cafe experience. Some of the most common materials for cafe table tops are wood, steel, and laminate. These materials each offer their unique properties and advantages that can meet different aesthetic preferences and practical needs.

Solid wood:

Cafe table tops made of solid wood are timeless and add a warm and inviting atmosphere to your cafe. The natural texture and color variations of the wood provide a rustic and authentic expression that fits well with both modern and traditional decor. Solid wood is also incredibly durable and resistant to daily use and wear, making it suitable for busy cafes and restaurants. There are wooden cafe tables in several different sizes, shapes, and types of wood – including teak and oak.

Laminate:

Laminate cafe table tops are known for their versatility and durability. The laminate surface is easy to clean and can withstand stains, scratches, and heat, making it ideal for café environments with hustle and bustle. Additionally, laminate comes in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and textures, making it easy to find a tabletop that matches your café decor. Laminate tabletops are typically cheaper and weigh less than solid wood.

The right size tabletops for cafés

You should not only choose how the tables should look – you also need to decide how large they should be. In cafés, tabletops of 60-70 cm are the most popular; there just needs to be enough space for a cup of coffee, a cold drink, or perhaps a club sandwich, so the tables do not need to be that large. In restaurants, on the other hand, there typically needs to be enough space to eat a full meal, and often there will be more than two people in a party, which is why restaurants often choose larger tables.

Here are our recommendations for café table sizes that suit different types of dining establishments:

Ø60 cm / 60×60 cm:
This size is ideal for cafés and bars that primarily offer coffee, breakfast, and light snacks. The compact table provides enough space to enjoy a cup of coffee or a light snack while fitting well into smaller café spaces where space may be limited.

Ø70 cm / 70×70 cm:
This is a perfect size for restaurants that serve daily specials and lighter meals. The table provides sufficient space to enjoy a delicious lunch or a light dinner while being suitable for smaller groups or couples who wish to share a meal.

Ø80 cm / 80×80 cm:
This size is best suited for restaurants that also serve dinner meals, where guests need more space for various glasses, plates, and serving dishes. The spacious table provides a pleasant dining experience for up to 4 people and is well-suited for dinner.

Tabletop in relation to the base

The choice of tabletop is largely related to the choice of base, both in terms of size and weight. It is important to find a tabletop that pairs well with the base to achieve optimal stability and durability. Some tabletops can only be used with certain bases due to specific mounting, while other tabletops are suitable due to their weight or size. To achieve the best stability, the tabletop should weigh less than the base and be sized appropriately to achieve the desired functionality and aesthetics.

Placement of the tables

When choosing a tabletop, its placement is an important parameter that you should consider. When placed in direct sunlight, lighter-colored tabletops are recommended, as dark tabletops are more susceptible to sunlight – both direct and indirect. If a dark tabletop is exposed to strong sunlight for an extended period, it may lead to warping of the tabletop.

On the other hand, white tabletops have a high albedo effect, meaning they reflect much of the sunlight. This makes them more suitable for areas with a high degree of sunlight, as they help keep the temperature of the tabletop down and minimize the risk of warping.

Space overview

Which tables you should choose for your seating and dining area depends on several parameters; first and foremost the purpose – should guests be able to enjoy both food and drinks or just a refreshment and smaller servings? Additionally, it naturally also depends on the space. Overcrowded areas are neither inviting nor functional. Good distance between the tables as well as a harmonious and dynamic placement is crucial for the overall experience.

How much space should guests have at the table?

When setting up your restaurant or cafe, it is important to consider how much space guests should have at the table. A good rule of thumb is that each guest should have at least 60 cm of space at the table, and preferably more if possible. This provides sufficient elbow room and space for a pleasant dining experience.

When it comes to coffee tables, you can allocate just 50 cm per cover. For dining, where knife and fork are to be used, we recommend an absolute minimum of 55 cm of space per guest, but such limited space can result in a less comfortable experience and limited space for the table setting as well as serving the food.

Space between the tables

It is easy enough to figure out how much space the table itself takes up – but how far apart should they be to allow space for chairs, guests, and waitstaff? When placing the tables, there should be a certain distance from other furniture or walls to avoid guests sitting too close together. We recommend a distance of 160 cm from table edge to table edge, so guests can sit down and get up without colliding with guests at the neighboring table when the chairs are moved in and out.

There should always be at least 75 cm from the edge of the table to a wall, and if service is to be provided at the tables, there should be at least 100 cm of space to facilitate serving and movement around the table. By choosing the right tables and placing them correctly, you can create a pleasant and inviting atmosphere where guests can enjoy their meal without feeling cramped.

Seating Guide

If you are confused, have lost track, or just want answers about which size base fits which size tabletop, or how many people can be seated at the table, we have created these clear tables. The seating guide is – as the name suggests – advisory. Chair type, plate and glass size, etc., also play a role in the ideal size of the cafe table. The following are common standard sizes for cafe tables, but there are also other measurements.

It is important to have sufficient elbow room so that guests can sit comfortably without being disturbed by their neighbor. Ideally, there should be 60-65 centimeters of space per person to avoid collisions with the elbows of the person next to them. The most popular table dimensions for cafes and restaurants are 60×60, 70×70, Ø60, and Ø70 cm. Generally, the tables in dining establishments should not exceed a size of 90 cm to optimize space and create as many seating options as possible.

Square tables

We also have larger tables with space for more people – perfect for larger gatherings:

Tip: The rectangular Napoli base fits perfectly with rectangular tabletops – for example, 70×60 or 80×70 cm – but it can also look spectacular under one of the many other cafe tabletops.

Round tables

Almost our entire selection of table tops can be combined with all table bases across the board – with a few exceptions; for round table tops over Ø 100 cm, we recommend the elegant and stylish Opus base, which can be used for table tops up to Ø 180 cm.

We also have the impressive Halfmoon base, which looks wonderful under round table tops with a diameter of 150 cm or more – for example, the beautiful table top Chicago in solid oak – but it can also provide a unique look under a rectangular table.

Transform the café’s atmosphere with the right furniture

The perfect café furniture can not only have a positive effect on the appearance and decor but also on the guests’ comfort and overall experience. First of all, it is important to consider the size of your venue. You may want small cafe tables for a more intimate atmosphere, or larger tables if you have plenty of space in your venue.

Think about how many people can sit at each table. There needs to be space for guests at the tables – and space for the tables in the cafe. There should be sufficient space to arrange the tables in a way that creates a functional, comfortable, and inviting atmosphere for everyone. At Zederkof, we can assist with advice and guidance on which size tables you should choose, and we would be happy to share our knowledge with you.

The shape of your tables can also have a significant impact on the overall atmosphere of your venue. Round tables create a more lively and natural space, while square tables are practical in changing setups and provide a very structured appearance. Rectangular tables are perfect for larger groups, and they can also be placed side by side to create a long, cohesive seating area.

Maintenance of cafe furniture

If you want to ensure your cafe furniture has a long and happy life, ongoing maintenance is the way to go. Maintenance is not just about cleaning; it is equally about proper handling and storage. Maintenance does not have to be a cumbersome and time-consuming affair – just good and simple routines that quickly become part of daily life.

How to maintain your cafe tables

  • Avoid lifting by the tabletop alone when moving the table. The screws that attach the tabletop to the base will loosen due to the weight of the base
  • Laminate tabletops are cleaned with a damp cloth
  • Two tables should not be stacked on top of each other, as the underside of the laminate tabletops cannot withstand water, and the tabletops can also become scratched
  • Brass/copper edges should be polished once a month with a polish suitable for each. messing or copper
  • Untreated wooden tabletops should be oiled as needed (when they look dry/dull or become difficult to wipe off)
  • Option to purchase new style screws for the frame for stability during wear

How to maintain your cafe chairs and benches

  • Cafe chairs and benches should be regularly wiped down with a damp cloth
  • Avoid sharp objects, as they can damage the textiles and poly rattan
  • You have the option to purchase new plastic feet in case of wear instead of a completely new chair or cafe bench
