How big should a parasol be?

Are you in need of a new parasol? It sounds simple. But you have no idea how vast the world of parasols is until you have to go out and buy the perfect parasol. Who would have thought that a parasol could have so many functions and come in so many designs? In this post, we will enlighten you on how large your parasol should be and what you need to consider before making your choice.

When we talk about the size of a parasol, most people will surely think about the diameter of the sunshade – and that is definitely the most important factor. However, the parasol pole determines how sturdy your parasol base needs to be, so it is also essential to take that into account.

How large is the terrace?

The first thing you can consider is how large the area of the parasol will be. The size should naturally harmonize with your terrace so that the parasol does not take over the entire space, but at the same time, it should meet your requirements for shade.

If you have a large terrace, it might also be a good idea to consider whether you would benefit more from one large parasol or two smaller ones, which will definitely be easier to move around. We recommend aiming for these sizes:

  • Ø 1.5-2 m: If you have a small terrace or balcony, it is important to keep it as simple as possible. Do not go over 2 m, as the parasol will appear far too dominant in your small outdoor area.
  • Ø 2-3 m: If you have a terrace or balcony of 20-30 m2 – perhaps with a small seating area and a grill – a parasol of this size is good. You can achieve a high optimal shade, but the parasol will also be easy to move around.
  • Ø 3-4 m: If you are lucky enough to have a terrace of more than 30 m2? Then you may have several seating arrangements that require shade. In that case, a large parasol with Ø4 m or two parasols with Ø3 m may be the right solution.

Which parasol should I choose?

As you may sense, the most important thing is the diameter of the sunshade, but we also briefly mentioned the parasol pole, which determines which parasol base you should choose. This factor is only relevant for you if you already have a parasol base that you would like to continue using, but otherwise, you should first acquire your parasol base when you have chosen the right size parasol.

Should your parasol be tiltable?

The sun moves all the time, and that also means we are forced to move the parasol to stay in the shade. But sometimes the sun is just positioned in a way where the parasol’s functions are not fully utilized – and in that case, it is an advantage to have a parasol that can be tilted. When you tilt the parasol, you can quickly angle the screen to block more sunlight. It is also a good solution for you who want as much shade as possible but do not have space for a huge parasol. However, be aware that the wind can quickly catch the parasol when the tilt function is in use, and this can result in the parasol tipping over.
